Phoebe Snow was the brainchild of Earnest Elmo Calkins, a partner in a New York City Advertising Agency that the D. & W. hired in to create a campaign promoting travel on its passenger trains. Calkins launched his Phoebe Snow campaign basing it around a young woman from New York City who was a frequent traveler of the railroad.
But the character was not forgotten. As the Lackawanna was planning its premier streamliner on the New York - Buffalo route after World War II, it drew upon the name and image of its earlier icon to christen the new crack train. The Phoebe Snow of was the result.
Phoebe Snow was a named passenger train which was once operated by the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad (DL&W) and, after a brief hiatus, the Erie Lackawanna Railway (EL). AroundDL&W launched a marketing campaign around the fictional character of Phoebe Snow to emphasize how the exhaust from its steam locomotives was cleaner.
